What Does a Head Teacher Do?

A head teacher is the individual who runs a school.  They will directly manage the heads of individual departments, but their primary role is to ensure that schools meet their targets.  To do this they need to ensure that the right conditions are provided for both children and staff so that everyone under their care can achieve their best.  They work as a part of their local community and need to adhere to local and national education policies.

As a head teacher, your day to day role might involve things such as controlling the schools finances, working with staff to ensure they know what is required of them, delegating tasks to staff, setting expectations of achievements for staff and pupils, supporting and assisting staff in their development, attending meetings both inside and outside the school, promoting equality and diversity within the school and creating a safe space for your pupils.

As a head teacher, you will work Monday to Friday during the day.  You will likely be contracted for 45 hours a week, for 40 weeks of the year,  however, your work is done when it is done.  You can expect longer hours.  You may also be needed to do a certain amount of work during the school holidays.

  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Good maths and IT skills and an ability to manage budgets

How Much Can a Head Teacher Earn?

A head teacher earns between £43,000 and £88,000 a year depending on skills and experience.  This can rise to over £100,000 a year for senior head teachers.

Private schools set their own rates of pay.

What Qualifications Do I Need To Become a Head Teacher?

To become a head teacher you would need to work as a teacher and progress into management.  To become a teacher you will need five GCSE's grade A-C including maths and English (also a science if you wish to teach at primary school level).  You will then need a degree in a subject relevant to what you wish to teach, followed by a year of teacher training. Other qualifications like the NPQH or a Master's in Education is also a huge plus when applying for a school headship.
